Iced Matcha, Three Ways for Warmer Days

KYŌ-KLUB·26 August 2026·5 min read

As soon as the weather turns, iced matcha becomes one of the best drinks you can make at home. It is refreshing, it looks beautiful, and it takes a couple of minutes. The trick is getting it smooth rather than clumpy, and once you have that, the variations are endless. Here are three to start with.

The one rule for iced matcha

Cold water does not dissolve matcha well, which is how you end up with powder floating on top. The fix is simple: always whisk your matcha into a small amount of warm water first, make a smooth paste and a thin liquid, and only then pour it over ice. That one step is the difference between a grainy drink and a clean one.

Recipe 1: Clean iced matcha

Sift one to two grams of matcha into a bowl or cup. Add a small splash of water at around 70 to 80°C and whisk to a smooth, lightly foamed liquid. Fill a glass with ice, top with cold water, and pour the matcha over. Stir once. This is the purest version, all bright grassy sweetness, and the best way to taste a good ceremonial grade.

Recipe 2: Iced matcha latte

Make the same whisked matcha base, then fill a glass with ice and pour over cold milk, dairy or plant based. Oat milk is a favorite for its natural sweetness and body. Add the matcha last so it pours in ribbons over the milk, then stir. Creamy, gentle, and endlessly repeatable.

Recipe 3: Lightly sweet and flavored

If you like it a touch sweeter, dissolve a little honey or a drop of vanilla into the warm matcha base before it cools, since sweeteners blend far better into warm liquid than cold. Pour over ice and milk as above. A pinch of citrus zest or a few mint leaves in the glass makes a nice summer variation.

A note on grade

For iced drinks you can use ceremonial or culinary grade. Ceremonial grade shines in the clean water version, where there is nothing to hide behind, while culinary grade holds up well in a sweeter, milkier latte. If you are unsure which to reach for, our guide to ceremonial versus culinary matcha breaks it down.

That is the whole toolkit: paste first, then ice, then milk or water. Once the base becomes second nature you will be inventing your own. For the hot version, see our guide on how to make a matcha latte at home, or pick up a tin of ceremonial grade matcha to build from.
