The Matcha Workshop in Amsterdam: What to Expect

KYŌ-KLUB·22 September 2026·5 min read

Matcha is having a moment in Amsterdam, but there is a difference between drinking it and understanding it. A workshop is where that gap closes. If you have wondered what actually happens in one, here is an honest walk through of our Matcha Workshop, held at our café on Kinkerstraat 334.

A hands-on session, not a lecture

The workshop runs for about 90 minutes and is built around doing, not just listening. It is an intimate, hands-on introduction to matcha for up to 8 guests, which keeps the group small enough that everyone gets time at the mill and the whisk. You do not need any experience, and you do not need a tea ceremony degree to join.

The story behind the powder

We start with the story. Matcha sits inside an 800 year legacy of Japanese tea culture, and understanding where it comes from changes how the rest of the session lands. You will learn what matcha actually is and how it is made, from shade grown leaf to fine green powder, so that everything you taste afterwards has context.

Grinding your own on a stone mill

This is the part most guests remember. You grind your own matcha on a traditional granite stone mill, the same slow method that has barely changed in centuries. Watching bright green powder appear from whole leaf, and knowing your hands made it, is a small revelation. It also explains, better than any label can, why stone ground matcha is prized.

Whisking and tasting

Next comes preparation. You will learn to whisk matcha properly, creating your own bowl of vibrant green tea or a creamy latte, and then you taste it. We walk through the umami flavor that defines good matcha and compare different grades and varieties side by side, so you leave able to tell quality from the ordinary. By the end you can recognize and evaluate matcha the way a connoisseur does.

The practical details

The Matcha Workshop takes place at our café on Kinkerstraat 334 in Amsterdam and lasts about an hour and a half. It runs for up to 8 guests and starts from 65 euro per person, including VAT. If you want to keep the ritual going at home, you can add a 30g tin of our Ceremonial Grade Matcha, worth 39 euro, for 30 euro extra when you book.

Who it is for

The workshop suits curious first timers, matcha regulars who want to go deeper, and groups looking for something different to do together, from friends to small teams. It makes a genuinely memorable gift as well.

If that sounds like your kind of afternoon, you can find the dates and book your spot on our Matcha Workshop page. And if you are still mapping out the city's tea scene first, our guide to the best places for matcha in Amsterdam is a good place to start.
